In a recent cabinet meeting, the UP government approved the policy for procuring paddy from share croppers and contract farmers. This move is aimed at ensuring payment of minimum support price (MSP) to genuine farmers. Payment will be made online within 72 hours of procurement. The government will make the requisite payment to farmers. The policy will take effect from October 1, 2019.
According to the government, rice prices are near MSP in 425 markets in the state. There are 51 varieties of paddy. The most commonly available varieties are 1009 Kar, Annapoorna, B P T, Basmati U.P., and Todal. Hence, the prices are higher in Uttar Pradesh than the rest of the country. This is because of high shipping freights. The price of shipping freight has soared by 300-400% in some sectors. As a result, rice exports in the state are expected to be 20-25% less than the figure for 2020-21.
The minimum rate of paddy is Rs 1,100 per quintal at Shahjahanpur Mandi in the Shahjahanpur district. Prices in Pilibhit district are also above MSP on 116 occasions. The lowest modal price of paddy during the week was Rs 1,250 per quintal at Kheri Mandi on October 16. The highest rate for paddy was Rs 1,900 per quintal during the same period.
